Jan Ostrý began playing the flute with Prof. V. Žilka and then under the guidance of Prof. F. Malotín at the Prague Conservatory. He continued his studies at the CNR de Versailles (Prof. Ch. Rayneau), and later as a scholarship holder of the French government at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Lyon in the class of the renowned flautist Ph. Bernold, where he completed his studies with a unanimous award of the prestigious 1st prize. During his studies, he attended master classes with leading flautists such as B. Kuijken, K. Hünteler, A. Marion, J. Zoon, and K. Zoeller.
He has performed at important concerts and festivals, including the Styriarte festival in Graz (founded for N. Harnoncourt's projects), the Haydn Festspiele in Eisenstadt, for the Dutch Radio in the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, the Pierre Boulez Days festival in Lyon and St.-Etienne (under the direction of P. Boulez), the Prague Spring, the St. Wenceslas Music Festival, the ORF Eggenberger Schosskonzerte festival in Graz, the Haydn Music Festival, the Martinů Fest in Vienna, the International Flute Festival in Maastricht, the Mitte Europa festival, Smetana's Litomyšl, the Concentus Moravia festival (with PKF and J. Bělohlávek), Saison Tchéque in France and many others.
He has participated in a number of recordings for the labels Studio Matouš, Supraphon, Naxos, Nimbus Records, Czech Radio, ORF, France Musique and Avro Klassiek. In the 1999/2000 concert season he was the solo flutist in the “Orchestre National de Lyon”, in the 2001/2002 season he held the same position in the “Den Norske Operaen Oslo”.
He currently leads flute classes at the Prague Conservatory and the Faculty of Arts of the University of Ostrava. As a sought-after teacher, he is invited to teach at a number of master classes and participate in professional juries, e.g. Academie International d’Eté in Nice, Internationale Meisterkurse in Vaduz, Universität fur Musik und darstellende Kunst in Vienna, Conservatoire national supérieur de Musique in Lyon, Concertino Praga and others. Since 2001 he has been a permanent teacher at the European Flute Academy in Fiss, Austria, and since 2003 also at music seminars at the Neuberger Kulturtage festival. Since the academic year 2017/18 he has also taught at the “Musik und Kunst Privatuniversität der Stadt Wien”.

Application requirements
- Age: from 12 years
- Planned maximum number of selected participants: 6–7 (ensemble, solo)
- Solo flute and chamber music (duos, trios, quartets with flute)
- Repertoire for video recording for soloists and ensembles: 2 pieces from different periods (total approx. 5–10 minutes)
